Saint Catherine Mountain Overnight Adventure

Two days in the Sinai: monastery, mountain, and sunrise at the summit.

Two Days That Go Deeper Than a Day Trip

This trip is designed for travelers who want to experience Saint Catherine and Mount Sinai without the constraints of a rushed same-day itinerary. Spending one night in the region changes the pace entirely: you arrive in the afternoon, visit the monastery when the light is softer and the crowds are thinner, and wake before dawn to begin the hike up Mount Sinai in time for sunrise.

The drive from Cairo takes about six hours each way, so the overnight structure is not a luxury addition. It is what makes the experience coherent. You get the monastery properly and the mountain at the right moment. Browse our full programs, or use Craft Your Journey to build a custom route around this trip.

What Makes This Trip Distinct

Four reasons this two-day format works where a day trip falls short.
Saint Catherine Monastery
One of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 6th century at the base of Mount Sinai.
Sunrise at the Summit of Mount Sinai
A pre-dawn hike reaching the 2,285-metre summit in time to watch daylight break over the Sinai Peninsula.
Bedouin Mountain Guides
Local Bedouin guides lead the Mount Sinai ascent. Their knowledge of the terrain and the mountain's rhythms is part of what the hike gives you.
Sinai Granite Landscape
The drive into Saint Catherine crosses a desert mountain landscape unlike anywhere else in Egypt, built from ancient rose granite.

What to Expect

The drive from Cairo is long, roughly six hours each way. Use the travel time to rest. The monastery visit is part-guided, part self-directed: the guide provides context, but the monastery runs on its own schedule and dress code requirements apply throughout the site.

The Mount Sinai hike starts in complete darkness. A headlamp is not optional. The path is well-used but rocky, and the temperature at the summit can be significantly colder than at the base, even in October or April. Bring warm layers regardless of when you travel.

The group is limited to 10 people, which keeps the hike manageable and lets the guide give proper attention to everyone.
