Aswan

The southernmost stop in Mo's Egypt itineraries, and the gateway to Nubia. The Nile is wider here, the landscape more open, and the culture visibly different from the north.

The Edge of Ancient Egypt

Aswan has a different character from Cairo and Luxor. The pace is slower, the landscape more open, and the Nubian culture that defines the region is visibly distinct from the Arab Egyptian culture further north. Philae Temple, rebuilt on Agilkia Island after the Aswan High Dam flooded the original site, is one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt. Abu Simbel, 280 kilometers further south, was carved directly into the rock face by Ramesses II and relocated stone by stone in the 1960s before Lake Nasser swallowed the original site. Getting there requires an early morning departure. It is worth it.
