Two Deserts, One Road
The Black Desert and the White Desert are both in Egypt's Western Desert, reached via the road toward Farafra. The Black Desert appears first: volcanic hills covered in black rocks and dark basalt, rising sharply from the sand. Further along, the landscape shifts completely. The White Desert is a surreal open expanse of chalk formations sculpted by centuries of wind into mushroom shapes, columns, and abstract forms that look different from every angle. Most programs include a night of camping here. The silence is total, the stars are extraordinary, and the formations at sunrise are unlike anything else in Egypt.
