The Giza Plateau
Giza is 15 kilometers from central Cairo, and the pyramids are visible from much of the city. Up close, the scale is different from any photograph. The Great Pyramid of Khufu stood at 146 meters when completed around 2560 BC, making it the tallest structure in the world for nearly four millennia. The Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure stand beside it, and the Great Sphinx guards the plateau from the east. The Solar Boat Museum holds a full-scale cedar vessel buried beside the pyramid, intact after 4,500 years. Most programs extend the day south to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's oldest stone building, predates Giza by over a century, and to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt.
