East Bank and West Bank
Luxor is divided by the Nile into two completely different experiences. The East Bank is where the living city grew around Karnak, the largest temple complex ever built, and Luxor Temple, which sits at the center of the modern city. The West Bank was reserved for the dead: the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, Medinet Habu, and the Colossi of Memnon standing at the edge of the floodplain. Seeing both banks properly takes at least two full days. Most programs allow for three.
