Faiyum Day Tour

One day from Cairo into Egypt's oldest oasis: pottery, waterfalls, and a UNESCO fossil site.
Day Trip

A Full Day in Egypt's Oldest Oasis

Faiyum sits about 100 kilometres southwest of Cairo and takes roughly 90 minutes to reach by road. The distance is short enough for a comfortable day trip, but the landscape shift is dramatic: from city traffic to open farmland, palmeries, and eventually the desert edges of Wadi El Rayan and Wadi El Hitan.

This tour covers three distinct experiences in one day: a hands-on pottery session in Tunis Village, the natural waterfalls and desert scenery of Wadi El Rayan, and a walk through the ancient fossil beds of Wadi El Hitan, where whale fossils preserved in desert floor earned the site its UNESCO listing. Browse our full programs, or use Craft Your Journey to add Faiyum to a longer Egypt route.

What This Day Covers

Four stops that make Faiyum worth the drive from Cairo.
Pottery in Tunis Village
A hands-on session with local artisans in Tunis Village, the small craft community that became Egypt's best-known pottery hub.
Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls
Egypt's only natural waterfalls, formed where water flows between two desert lakes inside the protected area of Wadi El Rayan.
Wadi El Hitan, Valley of the Whales
A UNESCO World Heritage Site where ancient whale fossils are preserved in open desert, one of the most significant paleontological sites in the world.
Traditional Egyptian Breakfast
The day starts with a proper traditional breakfast on arrival in Faiyum, before the morning visits begin.

What to Expect

The drive from Cairo to Faiyum takes approximately 90 minutes each way. The day starts on arrival with breakfast, so the schedule is full but not rushed. The pottery session in Tunis Village is hands-on and informal: you work alongside local artisans at their own pace.

Wadi El Rayan involves some walking on uneven ground near the waterfalls. The terrain at Wadi El Hitan is desert floor, flat but sandy in places. Sun exposure is significant at both sites, especially from late morning onward, so sun protection matters regardless of the season.

The group is limited to 10 people, which keeps the tour comfortable at each site and lets the guide give proper attention throughout the day.
